I just installed a Joomla theme for the first time on a domain, and I get this error when I click anywhere but the homepage. If you have SEO enabled on your site, you might try to make sure that you have changed your htaccess.txt file to .htaccess. If it is already, try checking to make sure that the .htaccess file is not empty. Sometimes this happens (not quite sure why), and would definitely affect your urls.

When I changed the htaccess.txt to .htaccess, that .htaccess file disappeared from my directory. Has this ever happened to anyone else? How do I recover it so I can make the changes noted above?

I experienced the same error when I turn on the "search engine friendly URLs". When I turn it off, everything is back to normal.Global configuration -> SEO settings -> Search engine friendly URLs -> No.

i experience the same error . Is there no way to get search engines to see my urls without seeing that error?

Fixing your URLs

There are a number of things that need to be in place if your URLs are
going to work with the native Joomla CMS. 1.Your htaccess.txt file must
be changed to .htaccess2. All three (3) of your SEO Settings need to be
set to "yes" in Global Configuration->site.3. Your webhost must use apache mod_rewrite. Hope this helps
